Silicone Wristbands initiative assisting Vanuatu Vaccine Program

Silicone Wristbands are being trialled for the Vanuatu HPV Vaccine Program by The University of Queensland’s Diamantina Institute for Cancer, Immunology and Metabolic Medicine in cooperation with the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation and the Vanuatu Ministry of Health.

The team, headed by 2006 Australian of the Year, Professor Ian Frazer, is conducting extensive research in Vanuatu after learning that young women would not return to get their second and third cervical cancer vaccine shot.

Vanuatu has one of the highest rates of cervical cancer in the world due to the lack of resources and screening programs. The initiative is being undertaken so upon completion the team can give educated recommendations to the Vanuatu government. After receiving their first shot the women are given a silicone wristband with the words “Don’t forget your next HPV Vaccine” written in English and Bislami, the native language in Vanuatu. After their second shot, they are given another colour wristband as a reminder to come back for the third. It was identified that a lot of the women were not coming back for their third shot, so the research being conducted will help to establish if this is an effective way to remind the young women to come back for the third and final shot.

Cervical cancer kills around 270 000 women worldwide each year, 90% of those are from developing countries such as Vanuatu. Professor Ian Frazer believes “that if the Program is successful, the idea will be extended to other locations around the world”.

Silicone Wristbands have been a popular way for charities and organisations to promote their message.
